Warm Beverages for Post Workout Recovery

Hey Baby, it cold outside! And I know just the thing to warm you up. Hey dirty-mind, get out of the gutter, I'm talking about beverages, especially those beverages that can warm you up and help with your post ride recovery.

Bicycling Mag gives you the run down of beverages to consider after a cold workout. The highlights are below, the details are located here: http://www.bicycling.com/article/0,6610,s-4-21-18154-1,00.html

Coffee: ...coffee does deliver impressive amounts of antioxidants--more than black or green tea, concluded a 2001 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Those antioxidants can speed recovery by helping muscles repair from the stress caused by tough workouts. Still, coffee on its own isn't an ideal recovery drink. "Having coffee with a complete breakfast is fine, but it shouldn't be the only thing you're counting on for replenishment,"

Tea: Like coffee, tea doesn't refuel the body with energy: Black, green and herbal varieties all contain virtually zero calories when brewed. ... tea's antioxidants are beneficial after a hard ride: Black, green and oolong varieties all contain detoxifying agents called polyphenols that neutralize muscle-damaging free radicals.

Clif: Clif introduced a powdered hot-chocolate drink mix designed for optimum recovery. Combining whey protein, sugars, a mix of vitamins and minerals, and even some antioxidants (courtesy of green-tea extract), Clif Shot Hot Chocolate is a well-rounded option.

Hot chocolate: Chocolate milk is one of the best post-exercise drinks available, and heating the beverage sacrifices none of its recovery benefits. Prepare powdered mixes with low-fat milk instead of water: Milk delivers protein, calcium, potassium and vitamin D, which replenish electrolytes and help build new muscle cells. Hot chocolate's sugars also refuel spent glycogen stores. But the "Dutching" process used to make most mixes destroys chocolate's touted antioxidants, so for maximum benefit, make the drink using pure powdered cocoa.

Apple cider: Good for hydration because it lacks caffeine, hot cider provides recovering muscles with the sugars they need.
