Good News About Coffee

C'mon, you know you want that cup of coffee in the morning. That caffeinated rocket fuel you need to get your day started. Sometimes you two in the morning and another one once you get to the office. You hate to admit it, but there are days you want more.

Don't sweat it. Unless you have a sensitivity to caffeine or you are slamming down a pot every morning, it turns out that coffee isn't all that bad for you, and it may actually do you some good.

In a large study of nearly 42,000 men and 86,000 women, focused on the relationship of coffee consumption and mortality over an 18 (for men) and 24 (for women) year period, with adjustments for age and health risk factors, it was concluded that:

Regular coffee consumption was not associated with an increased mortality rate in either men or women. The possibility of a modest benefit of coffee consumption on all-cause and CVD mortality needs to be further investigated.

We
can probably credit the antioxidant-rich beans used to brew the stuff. In fact, Americans drink so much coffee that it’s one of our top sources of antioxidants.

Caveat time....
If you are sensitive to caffeine, you don’t need to be told not to be a java junkie. And unfiltered coffee can raise blood fats, so use paper filters and ditch the French press. Although it remains to be seen if coffee has a long-term impact on blood pressure, we know it can cause a temporary spike, so go easy if you have high blood pressure. And -- as always -- do everything in moderation.
