Know the color of your food

I have some more posts coming up focused on food, tasty, healthy, and easy to make.

Here is a good article having you think about food in terms of color and how that color can be a benefit to you in your post ride/run/swim/stumble and break an arm recovery.
Okay, so maybe its only me who has to worry about the stumblimg part. Unfortunately, it happens frequently.

All of the details are located here: http://www.bicycling.com/article/0,6610,s-4-21-17816-1,00.html

Good thing to know:
Go easy on colorful foods just before a big ride or race, advises registered dietitian Shawn Dolan, Ph.D. They tend to be high in fiber, which can cause stomach upset during exercise. (Read: Hello bottom, meet the port-o-can) But in between workouts, go crazy with color.

Reds
Red cherries contain compounds called anthocyanins that appear to ease postexercise pain and inflammation: One study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine concluded that drinking cherry juice preserved muscle strength and reduced inflammation after workouts.
I will be buying some cherry juice soon.

Orange and Yellows
Orange and yellow foods such as carrots, sweet potatoes and yellow peppers get their color from carotenoids, compounds that boost the immune system.
Cold and flu season is just around the corner, so begin thinking about how to load up on these babies.

Green
Broccoli and kale rank among the world's most nutritious foods, and spinach and chard are high in folate, a B vitamin that helps build the red blood cells required to deliver oxygen to exercising muscles.
And, WOW, there is a whole bunch of fiber in them greens. Fiber, it cures what ails ya.

Blue and Violet
Blueberries, beets, blackberries and red cabbage derive their rich colors from anthocyanidins, anti-inflammatory compounds that promote healthy circulation. Swirl blues and purples into a smoothie for a postride recovery drink that's loaded with muscle-repairing antioxidants.
We had pretty good luck purchasing blueberries this year and they do add a nice touch to a smoothie.
